As far as his family and the public were concerned, Lt. Col. Roy Kaden’s top-secret mission never happened. It took 50 years for the flight commander to be recognized for the military service he performed during the Cold War. Until the year 2000, it had been highly classified. That changed with the fall of the Soviet Union and declassification of Kaden’s mission. When Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld spoke to a group of Cold War Reconnaissance Veterans, he said: “ … Today, you step from the shadows of the unknown and the unsung and at last assume your rightful place in the ranks of this nation’s heroes.” On this Mother’s Day, we salute another group of national heroes—mothers—mothers who know their strength comes from the Lord in their times of weakness. May we salute every mom who: Hasn’t finished an entire cup of coffee before it’s gotten cold. Hasn't eaten an entire meal at home without interruptions. Has lost a child to an untimely death and wonders, “Why?” Raises her children alone, working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. Battles a terminal illness … realizing that tomorrow’s memories are not promised. Wonders every day about the child she gave to another through adoption. Prayed for years for a prodigal child. Has seen her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren walk in faith. Some day, shadows will no longer hide these moms countless sacrifices and devotion. The Lord Himself will declassify each one's individual mission and wipe away every tear. He will point to the men, women and children who learned of Christ’s love because of their faithfulness, and say “Well done!” |
