Legacy Connection
Questions to Ask About Your Heritage

by Mary May Larmoyeux
During the months of May and June, thoughts often turn to moms and dads … grandmothers and
grandfathers. How can we pass on their legacy to the next generation?

I think part of the answer lies in knowing about their lives. Too often we live in the present and don’t
even think about the past. I know little about the family and background of my beloved grandmother,
Nana. And now it’s too late to ask her about her hopes and dreams.

You may want to ask your grandparents or parents a few of the following questions.  As you learn about
their past, you can capture their legacy for future generations.

1.       What was your childhood like?

2.       What were your parent’s like:  their personalities, hobbies, faith, etc.?

3.       How did you meet Dad/Mom (or Grandma/Grandpa)?

4.       Why did you marry him/her?

5.       What were your dreams when you got married?

6.       What have been some of your joys in life … some of your sorrows?

7.       What happened on the day when I was born?

8.       Why were you given your particular name?

9.       What was I like as a child?

10.     What is your most prized possession?  Why?

11.     What do you believe about eternity and why do you believe this?

12.     What is your most significant accomplishment in life?

13.     What dreams do you have for your grandchildren/great-grandchildren?

14.      What dreams do you have for yourself?

15.      Is there anything else that you’d like to share with me?
