| School is up and running again. Along with the new backpacks, school supplies, and a stylish wardrobe, unfortunately some children are going to be confronted by a bully this year. As a parent you need to have knowledge of the subject. There are three types of bullying. Verbal bullying which is name calling, teasing, or threats. Physical bullying is kicking, hitting, or pushing. Psychological bullying examples are intimidation, spreading rumors, and social isolation. Watch your child for symptoms of being a victim of bullying. Some of these are nightmares, anxiety, not wanting to go to school, or frequent illnesses. Try some of these strategies. Calmly listen to your child without asking your child what he/she did to provoke the behavior. Keep communication open. Role play the situations with your child where the bullying occurs to give strategies on how to react. Encourage your child to make new friends or to participate in sports. Find out your child’s school district bullying policy. If your child is being bullied, don’t stop with the information in this column. Read all you can about it. Be aware the age of your child also determines how to proceed. Help your child have a fun, safe, productive academic year. |
