If you would like to lead a six-week Bible study with Help for Busy Moms, you may want to follow the following outline that I (Mary May Larmoyeux) have used: :
Week One:
- Introductions
- Thank everyone for coming.
- Share your testimony.
- Thumb through the book together and emphasize that the ladies are to write one action point down for each
chapter (on the chart on pages 183-186).
- Ask everyone to write down their expectations for the Bible study on a note card and to give this to you (This will help
you understand everyone's needs and will also give you specific ways to pray for each woman.)
- Ask for examples from the group of unrealistic expectations. Discuss.
- Read Jean Fleming's quote on page 17--"Who gets my best?" Discuss.
- Assign Chapters One and Two for next week.
- Close in prayer. (You may also want to open in prayer.)
Week Two:
Chapter One
- Read Proverbs 31:28. What does blessed mean?
- Read Proverbs 31:30b. Why did this woman's husband praise her?
- Read 1 Samuel 12:24. What does fearing th Lord and serving Him faithfully mean to you?
- Read Luke 10:38-42 (NIV) -- Why did Mary choose what was better? How can we apply this to our lives?
Chapter Two
- Read "Take Time to Sharpen Your Ax," pages 24-25. Discuss.
- What happens when we don't sharpen our "ax"?
- Talk about ways to reduce stress in today's busy world.
- Read Psalm 94:16-19; 139-1-6; Jeremiah 29:11-13; Philippians 4:6-7 and discuss.
- Assign Chapter Three and Four for next week. Remind the women to record an action point for each chapter.
Week Three:
Chapter Three
- Discuss the Warren Wiersbe quote: "The Christian life is not a playground; it is a battleground."
- Read and discuss Eccles. 3:1.
- Discuss the challenges that the women have keeping priorities in order.
- Discuss how to evaluate expectations and the importance of margin in life.
- Talk about ways that we can show our spouses and children that we love them.
- Read Matthew 6:21 and discuss the world's treasures and the treasure of a woman who fears God.
Chapter Four
- Ask everyone to share a childhood memory.
- Read Shirley Dobson and Gloria Gaither's quote on page 45 of Help for Busy Moms and discuss.
- Read Psalm 127:3.
- Why do people say that in raising children, "The years fly buy but the days of changing diapers drag on" ?
- Brainstorm ways to make family memories.
- Talk about the value of journaling and discuss various ways that different people journal.
- Turn to page 63 of Help for Busy Moms and read the directions for making homemade play dough and rainbow toast.
- Ask everyone the questions on page 67.
- Assign Chapter Five
Week Four:
Chapter Five
- Read Ecclesiastes 3:1 and Matthew 11:28 and discuss.
- Ask everyone to share something that they do to simplify their lives.
- Go through the questions with the group on pages 83-84.
- What does this mean: the "tyranny of the urgent"?
- Bring in some articles about kids today being rushed through their childhoods. Discuss.
- Assign Chapter Six and Seven.
Week Five:
Chapter Six:
- Read and discuss the illustration about Ha Ha Tonka State Park in Chapter Six (pages 85-86).
- Ask the women to share their "treasures."
- What activities/decisions reveal where our hearts truly are?
- Read the quotes on page 87. What do these words say about the value of being a mom?
- How can we help make our kids' faith their own?
Chapter Seven
- Discuss memories of our parents' modeling faith.
- What do you think about this saying, "Faith is more caught than taught?"
- Why is important to pass the baton of truth to the next generation? How can we do this?
- Read John 3:3-5. What does Jesus' example with Nicodemus tell us about faith, questioning in sincerity, and waiting
on God?
- Assign Chapter Nine and Ten. (The women can read Chapter Eight on their own.)
Week Six:
Chapter Nine
Read the verses on page 127. How have other people helped you and how have you helped others?
Chapter Ten
Read Psalm 139:14-18. Discuss. Discuss the unique ways different children are created. Discuss Questions 5 and 6 on page 130 of Help for Busy Moms.
If possible, invite a guest speaker for Week Six--example: someone who shares about ways to save money, someone who can explain the different personalities, etc.
