A Tangled Web

Karen Jordan
There’s something about a tangled mess of wires that infuriates me.

Tangled web of wires. One night, as I attempted to help my husband install a new computer in my office, the
twisted and jumbled bunch of wires overwhelmed me. Lying on the floor, upside-down, reaching under my desk, I
needed a flashlight and my glasses to see where to plug the cables.

I threaded every strand through a small opening in the desktop, winding them through a second pass-through
under my desk. Then, I struggled to connect each of them to the right port, sliding the computer out of the slot
under the desk and trying to make each connection.

Some of the wires weren’t long enough to reach the computer. And the electrical cords supplying power to my
paper shredder, stapler, hole puncher, phone, and phone charger added to my confusion. Out of frustration, I
unplugged all the power wires and moved the extra office equipment out of my way to minimize the confusion with
the computer cords.

Chaotic life. Some days my busy life needs sorting and untangling. I have so many projects going at once that I
can’t focus on the most urgent ones. So, I pull away from some of the distractions and commitments to focus on
my priorities. Then, after putting things in order according to their importance, I add the other things back in as
needed. If I discover they aren’t necessary, I dismiss them entirely.

Life offers us temptations and distractions daily. I’ve discovered the only way through the confusion in my life is to
seek direction from God’s Word. And as I focus on Jesus—God’s Word—He brings peace and order to my chaotic
day.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders
and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our
eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…”
