The Poet's Touch

Drifting round the corner
Ripples of laughter and chatter resonate.
Our pace quickens.
A Circus palette of reds, golds and hot pinks
greets the eye.
Moms, dads, grandparents and classmates
Await the timbre of a drum roll.

Her coat ablaze in satin red,
Her black top hat alive with sparkles,
The Ringmaster boldly announces:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, a special treat.
The Amazing Acrobats. Our next act, The Slippery Seals …
The Energetic Elephants … The Balancing Ballerinas” … and on and on.

Believing she is unnoticed on the sidelines
The Ringmaster imitates every act from memory
Unaware that the applause is for a duo performance …
The Circus actors
And six-year-old Ringmaster, Clare.
