Drifting round the corner Ripples of laughter and chatter resonate. Our pace quickens. A Circus palette of reds, golds and hot pinks greets the eye. Moms, dads, grandparents and classmates Await the timbre of a drum roll. Her coat ablaze in satin red, Her black top hat alive with sparkles, The Ringmaster boldly announces: “Ladies and Gentlemen, a special treat. The Amazing Acrobats. Our next act, The Slippery Seals … The Energetic Elephants … The Balancing Ballerinas” … and on and on. Believing she is unnoticed on the sidelines The Ringmaster imitates every act from memory Unaware that the applause is for a duo performance … The Circus actors And six-year-old Ringmaster, Clare. |
| Rita Goodgame has been published in Woman's World, Grandmother Earth, and in A Fordham Anthology. She has won an Arkansas Writers' Grand Conference Literary Award, First Place awards in ByLine Magazine and prose/poerty awards in The National League of American Pen Women, Pioneer Branch. She finds great pleasure writing stories for her seventeen grandchildren. |
