Manners, Anyone?

with June Hines Moore
When a flat card is used, write the note on the front side of the card. The handwritten side of the card
goes into the envelope facing the person inserting it. When the receiver opens the envelope, the written
side comes out facing him or her and is ready to read.

Here are some important guidelines for writing thank-you notes:

  • If possible, buy notepaper or cards without Thank You preprinted on them. If you must use notes
with Thank You preprinted on them, do not begin writing our thank-you note with "thank you."

  • In your own words, tell how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness.

  • If you don't like the gift, do not say so. You can always find something good to say about it, such
as "Thank you for your thoughtfulness in choosing _________ for me."

  • Always name the gift and tell how you plan to use it. If the gift is money, it is better not to mention
the amount. If the note is for a kind act or favor, mention it.

  • Write the note as soon as possible, but remember it is never too late to write one. You may
apologize for sending it late, but do not make excuses.

Short, handwritten notes are preferred over preprinted, typed, or e-mailed ones.
